Late Bloomer
Dear Dr. Ava
Q & A Single Men
by Dr. Ava Cadell
Late Bloomer
Question: I was a late bloomer, in the sexual sense. The first time I had sex was when I was 25, which is old for a guy as good looking as me. Anyway, I'm now pushing 36 and my sex drive hasn't slowed down in the slightest. In fact, it's gotten more pronounced. Am I possibly burning my sexual fuel at a higher rate and it’s just going to peter out one day, no pun intended? If that’s the case, I’ll pace myself.
Answer: I’ve never known a human being that was sexually oriented to run out of climaxes. There is a myth that most men are in their sexual peak between 18 and 22, but there are some men who are virile into their 70’s. It’s not about chronological age, but a state of mind. So stop worrying about what age you had your first sexual experience. Focus instead on what age your sexuality was first awakened. When did you have your first wet dream? Think about why you chose not to pursue your sexual fantasies as a teenager and you’ll have your answer to why you waited until you were twenty-five. There is no right or wrong age and there’s nothing unusual about your sex drive becoming more pronounced. I recommend you satisfy your sexual urges through masturbation and/or a consensual sexual relationship and stop worrying about pacing yourself or depriving yourself of pleasure. Perhaps it might help to learn more about problems similar to your own that are experienced by other people. Many examples can be found in my book, Confessions to a Sexologist.
