Empowerment Works was founded in 2001 and is comprised of a growing network of people, businesses and organizations who understand that by bringing the best of our resources and ideas to the table, we build a better world for humanity.
Through EW, these diverse Partners in empowerment provide access to capital, marketing opportunities for products that honor indigenous heritage, critical knowledge, appropriate technologies and creative ideas - empowering grass-roots partners with the tools they need to co-create a secure future.
EU measures success, be it the health of the children in a community orphan care project, number of indigenous trees planted by a regional youth group, or sustainable lively-hoods created in a fair trade initiative. Pre-identified measurable (quantifiable, and/or qualitative) indicators are consistently monitored, reported to Community Action Teams and shared with EW for cyclical evaluation and learning.
Focusing on improving human and environmental security, we value “quality of life” - life expectancy, child survival, access to organic earth, clean water and air, status of human rights, a woman’s ability to negotiate sex, quantify hours at play vs. work, maintenance of cultural literacy, native tongues - as indicators of success, not simply increased consumption per capita.
Melanie St. James is Co-Founder and Executive Director of EW. She has dedicated her life to humanitarian causes all of her adult life with innovative educational workshops at diverse environmental and social forums. Some of her highlights include the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto and co-creating EW Zimbabwe's Orphan care & HIV prevention programs.
